This is realized through quantifying the underlying non-equilibrium potential landscape topography and the kinetics of state switching. We found that an optimal compromise for a working memory circuit between the robustness and the flexibility can be achieved through the emergence of an intermediate state between the working memory states. DDD86481 price An optimal combination of both increased self-excitation and inhibition can enhance the flexibility to external signals without significantly reducing the robustness to the random fluctuations. Furthermore, we found that the enhanced performance in working memory is supported by larger energy consumption. Our approach can facilitate the design of new network structure for cognitive functions with the optimal balance between performance and cost. Our work also provides a new paradigm for exploring the underlying mechanisms of many cognitive functions based on non-equilibrium physics.BACKGROUND Isolated superior mesenteric artery dissection (SMAD) is a rare vascular disease that is difficult to diagnose. We report a case of SMAD in a patient with an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) that mimicked an impending rupture of the AAA. In addition, we describe several clinical biases that contributed to the delayed diagnosis. CASE REPORT A 66-year-old man presented with a 3-day history of abdominal pain, without a history of trauma, that worsened gradually and caused him to visit our hospital. The patient’s medical history included an AAA under observation. The patient was well oriented and initially remained hemodynamically stable, and the abdomen was soft and non-tender on palpation. An emergency contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) scan confirmed a 44-mm AAA without any leakage, but with an isolated SMAD. His previous physician confirmed there was no change in the AAA size since 3 months prior to hospital admission. Thus, the symptoms were caused by the isolated SMAD. The patient showed improvement with pain-relieving and antihypertensive management, without anticoagulation therapy or revascularization, and was discharged on day 25 of admission without any complications. CONCLUSIONS The misdiagnosis in this case was attributable to several clinical biases, including search satisfaction, Sutton’s slip, and anchoring bias. Physicians should guard against presumptive diagnoses based on patient symptoms or initial plausible findings and instead pursue a thorough workup to reach a definitive diagnosis.BACKGROUND Gastric cancer (GC) is the third leading cause of cancer-associated mortality in the world. Expression of circular RNA circ_C16orf62 is reported to be low in GC. The role and mechanism of circ_C16orf62 remain unclear. MATERIAL AND METHODS Expression levels of circ_C16orf62 and tubulin beta-2A chain (TUBB2A) in GC tissues and cells, and microRNA-421 (miR-421) level in GC cells were detected by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). The predominant cytoplasmic localization of circ_C16orf62 was identified by subcellular fractionation. The protein level of TUBB2A was detected by western blot assay. Cell proliferative ability, migration, and invasion were measured by 3-(4, 5-dimethyl-2-thiazolyl)-2, 5-diphenyl-2-H-tetrazolium bromide (MTT), colony formation, and several transwell assaysy. The binding relationship between miR-421 and circ_C16orf62 or TUBB2A was predicted by starBase3.0 or Targetscan, and then verified by the dual-luciferase reporter assay. The biological role ofcirc_C16orf62 was examined by xenograft tumor model in vivo. RESULTS Circ_C16orf62 andTUBB2A were downregulated in GC tissues and cells. Circ_C16orf62 was predominantly located in the cytoplasm of GC cells, and repressed proliferation, migration, and invasion of GC cells. Mechanistically, circ_C16orf62 worked as the miR-421 sponge to upregulate TUBB2A in GC, thereby hindering GC growth. Circ_C16orf62 repressed GC tumor growth in vivo. CONCLUSIONS These findings demonstrate that circ_C16orf62 impeded proliferation, migration, and invasion in vitro and retarded tumor growth in vivo by the miR-421/TUBB2A axis in GC, providing a potential therapeutic strategy for patients with GC.

The purpose of this project was to evaluate and improve the oral presentation assessment component of a required research training curriculum at an undergraduate medical school by analyzing the quantity, quality, and variety of peer and faculty feedback on medical student oral research presentations.

We conducted a program evaluation of oral presentation assessments during the 2016 and 2017 academic years. Second-year medical students (n=225) provided oral presentations of their research and received narrative feedback from peers and faculty. All comments were inductively coded for themes and Chi-square testing compared faculty and peer feedback differences in quantity, quality, and variety, as well as changes in feedback between the initial and final presentations. Comparative analysis of student PowerPoint presentation files before and after receiving feedback was also conducted.

Over two years, 2,617 peer and 498 faculty comments were collected and categorized into ten themes, with the top three bein its value in developing communication skills.

Desire thinking is a voluntary cognitive process that involves the perseverative focus on memories, images and information related to a desired target. The aim of the present study was to validate the Hebrew version of the Desire Thinking Questionnaire (DTQ; Caselli & Spada, 2011) in a sample of adolescents and to investigate its relationship with measures of thought suppression, impulsivity and individual-based compulsive sexual behaviour.

In Study 1, a convenience sample of 718 adolescents completed the newly translated Desire Thinking Questionnaire in Hebrew (DTQ-H) and results were subjected to an Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA). In Study 2, a convenience sample of 379 adolescents completed a battery of questionnaires including the DTQ-H. A Confirmatory Factors Analysis was performed on the DTQ-H and validity was ascertained by correlating with other measures.

In Study 1, a 9-item two-factor structure was identified. A 6-item two-factor structure was confirmed in Study 2. Results also indicated that the DTQ-H has acceptable levels of reliability, and good concurrent and incremental validity in predicting compulsive sexual behaviour.
