Aim Our study aimed to examine the relationship of the visceral adiposity index (VAI) with clinical and histological parameters in biopsy-proven nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) cases and evaluate its place in clinical practice. Materials and Methods The study included 57 biopsy-proven NAFLD cases and 57 healthy controls. The VAI values of the cases were calculated with the formula based on body mass index, waist circumference, triglycerides, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels. The relationships between VAI values and clinical and histological parameters were examined. Results While the VAI was significantly higher in the NAFLD cases in comparison to the control group (3.5 ± 3.09 vs. 1.60 ± 0.98, respectively, P less then 0.001), this difference was more noticeable in the nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) group (3.60 ± 3.35) (P less then 0.001). In distinguishing the NAFLD group and the healthy group in VAI, it was determined that VAI had a sensitivity of 72%, specificity of 68%, and an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve value of 76.9%. No significant relationship was found between the histological parameters and VAI scores. Conclusions Our study showed that VAI was increased in the NAFLD cases. This increase was observed to be more noticeable in especially the NASH cases. It is possible for this index to be a practical modality that could be used in clinical practice in prediction of especially NASH cases, which constitute the progressive form of the disease, but in this sense, there is a need for further studies.Torpor is thought to be particularly important for small endotherms occupying cold environments and with limited fat reserves to fuel metabolism, yet among birds deep torpor is both rare and variable in extent. We investigated torpor in hummingbirds at approximately 3800 m.a.s.l. in the tropical Andes by monitoring body temperature (Tb) in 26 individuals of six species held captive overnight and experiencing natural air temperature (Ta) patterns. All species used pronounced torpor, with one Metallura phoebe reaching a minimum Tb of 3.26°C, the lowest yet reported for any bird or non-hibernating mammal. The extent and duration of torpor varied among species, with overnight body mass (Mb) loss negatively correlated with both minimum Tb and bout duration. We found a significant phylogenetic signal for minimum Tb and overnight Mb loss, consistent with evolutionarily conserved thermoregulatory traits. Our findings suggest deep torpor is routine for high Andean hummingbirds, but evolved species differences affect its depth.Background Uptake of genetic testing for heritable conditions is increasingly common. In families with known autosomal dominant genetic cancer predisposition syndromes (CPS), testing youth may reduce uncertainty and provide guidance for future lifestyle, medical, and family building considerations. The goals of this systematic review were to examine (1) how parents and their children, adolescents, and young adults (CAYAs) communicate and make decisions regarding testing for CPS and (2) how they communicate and make decisions about reproductive health/family building in the context of risk for CPS. Methods Searches of MEDLINE/Pubmed, CINAHL, Web of Science, and PsycINFO yielded 4161 articles since January 1, 2000, which contained terms related to youth, pediatrics, decision-making, genetic cancer predispositions, communication, and family building. Results Articles retained (N = 15) included five qualitative, six quantitative, and four mixed-method designs. click here Parents generally agreed testing results should be disclosed to CAYAs at risk or affected by genetic conditions in a developmentally appropriate manner. Older child age and child desire for information were associated with disclosure. Greater knowledge about risk prompted adolescents and young adults to consider the potential impact on future relationships and family building. Conclusions Most parents believed it was their responsibility to inform their CAYAs about genetic testing results, particularly to optimize engagement in recommended preventative screening/lifestyle behaviors. Disclosing test results may be challenging due to concerns such as young age, developmental appropriateness, and emotional burden. Additional research is needed on how CPS risk affects CAYAs’ decisions about reproductive health and family building over time.This study aimed to investigate antimicrobial resistance (AMR) characteristics of Escherichia coli isolates from pig origin (including pigs, pig carcass, and pork) and humans in Thailand and Lao People’s Democratic Republic (PDR) border provinces. The majority of the E. coli isolates from Thailand (69.7%) and Lao PDR (63.3%) exhibited multidrug resistance. Class 1 integrons with resistance gene cassettes were common (n = 43), of which the most predominant resistance gene cassette was aadA1. The percentage of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) producers was 3.4 in Thailand and 3.2 in Lao PDR. The ESBL genes found were blaCTX-M14, blaCTX-M27, and blaCTX-M55, of which blaCTX-M55 was the most common (58.6%). Ser-83-Leu and Asp-87-Asn were the predominant amino acid changes in GyrA of ciprofloxacin-resistant isolates. Twenty-two percent of all isolates were positive for qnrS. Class 1 integrons carrying aadA1 from pigs (n = 1) and ESBL genes (blaCTX-M55 and blaCTX-M14) from pigs (n = 2), pork (n = 1), and humans (n = 7) were located on conjugative plasmids. Most plasmids (29.3%) were typed in the IncFrepB group. In conclusion, AMR E. coli are common in pig origin and humans in these areas. The findings confirm AMR as One Health issue, and highlight the need for comprehensive and unified collaborations within and between sectors on research and policy.The effects of mycorrhization (inoculation and non-inoculation) on growth and quality of two ecotypes (Baft and Ramjerd) of Glycyrrhiza glabra L. under heavy metals stress (0, 300 Pb + 20 Cd (H1) and 600 Pb + 40 Cd (H2) (mg kg-1) was investigated. Higher concentration of heavy metals decreased shoot dry weight in Baft (7.05%) and Ramjerd (43.34%) than control. Root dry weight increased in mycorrhizal Baft (28.23%) and Ramjerd (31.84%) ecotypes under H2 than non-mycorrhizal plants. In mycorrhizal plants, root colonization percentage decreased 37.07% in H2 than control. Increasing heavy metals concentration led to increase of total antioxidant activity and total phenol content. Mycorrhizal Ramjerd showed the lowest shoot Pb concentration in both heavy metals concentrations and the highest root Pb concentration (107.25% higher than non-mycoorhizal one) in H2. For both ecotypes, the lowest shoot Cd concentration observed in mycorrhizal plants under H1 and mycorrhizal plants had more root Cd concentration (33.83 mg kg-1 dry matter) than non-mycorrhizal ones.
