    In conclusion, we found that elderly have a physiological normal ability to improve aerobic capacity and mitochondrial function with aerobic training compared to young individuals, but had a faster decline in endurance performance and muscle mitochondrial enzyme activity after deconditioning, suggesting an age-related issue in maintaining oxidative metabolism.

    Recent systematic reviews and international guidelines recommend patient education, exercises, and weight control (if overweight) as first-line treatment for patients with hip or knee osteoarthritis (OA). The Active with osteoArthritis (AktivA) program is a physiotherapy model for the implementation of these guidelines into clinical primary care practice. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the long-term effects of and adherence to the AktivA program for patients with mild to moderate knee or hip OA.

    The AktivA program includes three modules a physiotherapy certification course, a patient education and exercise program and an electronic quality register. An electronic questionnaire including questions about, pain, quality of life, physical activity, self-efficacy and satisfaction with the AktivA program are sent to the participants at inclusion and after 3, 12 and 24 months. A linear mixed model for repeated measurements was used to assess the difference between the follow-up times.

    Until January 2020, 6245 patients were included in the register. The response rates were 98%, 86% and 63% at 3, 12 and 24 months, respectively. After participating in the AktivA program, the patients reported decreased pain and increased health-related and disease-specific quality of life at three months and the positive effect was maintained up to two years after inclusion. The proportion of patients reporting to be inactive or having a low physical activity level was reduced from 43% to 22%. After two years, more than 80% of the participants reported to use what they have learned from the AktivA program at least once a week.

Organic solvent extracts of fermented strains of S. toxica exhibited potent antimicrobial activity, including potent growth inhibition of human pathogenic yeasts Candida albicans and Cryptococcus neoformans, the respiratory pathogenic fungus Aspergillus fumigatus, and the Gram-positive bacterium Staphylococcus aureus. Bioassay-guided separations led to the purification and structure elucidation of new peptaibiotics designated as sphaerostilbellins A and B. Their structures were established mainly by analysis of NMR and HRMS data, verification of amino acid composition by Marfey’s method, and by comparison with published data of known compounds. They incorporate intriguing structural features, including an N-terminal 2-methyl-3-oxo-tetradecanoyl (MOTDA) residue and a C-terminal putrescine residue. The minimal inhibitory concentrations for sphaerostilbellins A and B were measured as 2 μM each for C. compound 991 neoformans, 1 μM each for A. fumigatus, and 4 and 2 μM, respectively, for C. albicans. Murine macrophage cells were unaffected at these concentrations.In this study, acoustic streaming flows inside micro-channels induced by three different types of obstruction-gaseous bubble, liquid droplet and solid bulge-are compared and investigated experimentally by particle tracking velocimetry (PTV) and numerically using the finite element method (FEM). The micro-channels are made by poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) using soft lithography with low-cost micro-machined mold. The characteristic dimensions of the media are 0.2 mm in diameter, and the oscillation generated by piezoelectric actuators has frequency of 12 kHz and input voltages of 40 V. The experimental results show that in all three obstruction types, a pair of counter-rotating vortical patterns were observed around the semi-circular obstructions. The gaseous bubble creates the strongest vortical streaming flow, which can reach a maximum of 21 mm/s, and the largest u component happens at Y/D = 0. The solid case is the weakest of the three, which can only reach 2 mm/s. The liquid droplet has the largest v components and speed at Y/D = 0.5 and Y/D = 0.6. Because of the higher density and incompressibility of liquid droplet compared to the gaseous bubble, the liquid droplet obstruction transfers the oscillation of the piezo plate most efficiently, and the induced streaming flow region and average speed are both the largest of the three. An investigation using numerical simulation shows that the differing interfacial conditions between the varying types of obstruction boundaries to the fluid may be the key factor to these differences. These results suggest that it might be more energy-efficient to design an acoustofluidic device using a liquid droplet obstruction to induce the stronger streaming flow.For the post-surgical treatment of oral wounds and mucosal defects beyond a certain size, the gold standard is still an autologous skin or mucosal graft in combination with complex suturing techniques. A variety of techniques and biomaterials has been developed for sutureless wound closure including different tissue glues or collagen patches. However, no wound covering that enables for sutureless fixation has yet been introduced. Thus, a new system was developed that allows for sutureless wound covering including a transparent collagen membrane, which can be attached to the mucosa using a specially modified 2λ laser beam with integrated temperature sensors and serum albumin as bio-adhesive. The sutureless wound closure system was tested for its applicability and its cytocompatibility by an established in vitro model in the present study. The feasibility of the laser system was tested ex vivo on a porcine palate. The in vitro cytocompatibility tests excluded the potential release of toxic substances from the laser-irradiated collagen membrane and the bio-adhesive.
