This unusual chain migration pattern in common swifts is largely driven by differential annual timing and we suggest it evolves by prior occupancy and dominance by size in the breeding quarters and by prior occupancy combined with diffuse competition in the winter.
To determine the utility of fetal echocardiography in diagnosing cardiac defects in fetuses with a single umbilical artery (SUA).
A retrospective cohort study of prenatally diagnosed SUA was conducted over a 10-year period at a single institution. Cardiac anatomy on detailed anatomical survey was compared with fetal echocardiogram for fetuses with prenatally diagnosed SUA. A diagnostic meta-analysis of studies comparing fetal anatomical survey to fetal echocardiogram in fetuses with SUA between 2010 to 2019 was also performed.
Three hundred and twenty fetuses with SUA were identified, 113 of which had completed both ultrasound and echocardiography. There were 36 cases of cardiac defects on prenatal echocardiogram and all had abnormal anatomical ultrasounds. There were zero cases of abnormal cardiac exams (0%) when the cardiac views on anatomical survey were normal. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value of ultrasound were 100%, 77%, 73% and 100%, respectively. A summary ROC curve demonstrated a high predictive value of routine anatomic survey for cardiac defects (AUC 0.99).
Anatomic survey is highly predictive in the detection of cardiac defects in fetuses with SUA. Fetal echocardiogram is unnecessary in SUA when cardiac views are normal on ultrasound.

For melanoma, the targeting of TRAIL signaling appears highly attractive, due to pronounced TRAIL receptor expression in tumor tissue. However, mechanisms of TRAIL resistance observed in melanoma cells may limit its clinical use. The Bcl-2 family members are critical regulators of cell-intrinsic apoptotic pathways. Thus, the antiapoptotic Bcl-2 protein myeloid cell leukemia 1 (Mcl-1) is overexpressed in many tumor types and was linked to chemotherapy resistance in melanoma. In this study, we evaluated the involvement of antiapoptotic Bcl-2 proteins (Bcl-2, Bcl-xL , Bcl-w, Mcl-1, Bcl-A1, and Bcl-B) in TRAIL resistance. They were targeted by small interfering RNA-mediated silencing in TRAIL-sensitive (A-375, Mel-HO) and in TRAIL-resistant melanoma cell lines (Mel-2a, MeWo). This highlighted Mcl-1 as the most efficient target to overcome TRAIL resistance. In this context, we investigated the effects of Mcl-1-targeting microRNAs as well as the Mcl-1-selective inhibitor S63845. selleck chemical Both miR-193b and S63845 resulted in significant enhancement of TRAIL-induced apoptosis, associated with decreased cell viability. Apoptosis induction was mediated by caspase-3 processing as well as by Bax and Bak activation, indicating the critical involvement of intrinsic apoptosis pathways. These data may indicate a high relevance of Mcl-1 targeting also in melanoma therapy. Furthermore, the data may suggest to consider the use of the tumor suppressor miR-193b as a strategy for countering TRAIL resistance in melanoma.Barley, a kind of cereal, is rich in polysaccharides, phenols, proteins, β-glucan, etc. Our previous studies discovered that extracts from Lactobacillus plantarum dy-1-fermented barley (LFBE) held strong anti-obesity property in obese rats through inhibiting inflammation and suppressing the differentiation in 3T3-L1 preadipocytes; however, the precise mechanism of LFBE regulating lipid metabolism remains elusive. Results suggested LFBE and its main active components, especially the total phenols, exhibited fat-lowering effects in glucose treated Caenorhabditis elegans at a certain concentration. Additionally, LFBE and the main components changed related genes in the insulin signaling pathway, fatty acid oxidation, and synthesis. Following verification study using mutants confirmed that the daf-2 gene rather than the daf-16 gene was required in LFBE and main components regulating lipid metabolism, which also involved in the process of fatty acid β-oxidation and unsaturated fatty acid synthesis. Results demonstrated that LFBE and its main bioactivate compounds inhibited fat accumulation partly in a daf-2-dependent mechanism. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS Our previous studies have reported that extracts of fermented barley exhibited anti-obesity activity. However, little is known about which functional factors play a leading role in decreasing fat deposition and its precise mechanism. Results indicated that daf-2 mediated signaling pathways involved in the fat-lowering effects of LFBE and its main components. Our findings are beneficial to understand the main nutritional ingredients in LFBE which are ideal and expected in functional foods for the obese.Arboviruses, such as chikungunya, dengue, yellow fever, and zika, caused by the bite of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, have been a frequent public health problem, with a high incidence of outbreaks in tropical and subtropical countries. These diseases are easily confused with a flu-like illness and present very similar symptoms, difficult to distinguish, and treat appropriately. The effects that these infections cause in the organism are fundamentally derived from complex metabolic processes. A prominent area of science that investigates the changes in the metabolism of complex organisms is the metabolomics. Metabolomics measures the metabolites produced or altered in biological organisms, through the use of robust analytical platforms, such as separation techniques hyphenated with mass spectrometry, combined with bioinformatics. This review article presents an overview of the basic concepts of metabolomics workflow and advances in this field, and compiles research articles that use this omic approach to study these arboviruses. In this context, the metabolomics is applied to search new therapies, understand the viral replication mechanisms, and access the host-virus interactions.
