The mixed bacteria had a better effect than any single bacteria, suggesting the strains worked synergistically to enhance the degradation efficiency. In the co-metabolism system of 600 mg/L pyrene and 1.4 g/L sodium citrate, pyrene degradation reached 74.6%, was 1.57 times, 2.06 times, and 3.89 times that of the mix-culture strains, single PA06 and single AC15 without sodium citrate, respectively. Overall, these findings are valuable as a potential tool for the bioremediation of high-molecular-weight PAHs.
The inguinal canal anatomy is of paramount clinical significance due to the common occurrence of direct and indirect inguinal hernias. However, the inguinal canal is often an area of great difficulty for medical students to understand. The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of a low-cost, low-fidelity inguinal canal model as a teaching and learning aid.
A low-fidelity inguinal canal model was introduced as a learning aid in an anatomy tutorial on the inguinal region. Students were randomised into intervention (n = 66) and control (n = 40) groups. Following the tutorial, all students completed a multiple-choice question quiz on the inguinal canal. The intervention group also completed a questionnaire evaluating the positive and negative aspects of the model.
Students taught with the inguinal canal model achieved higher scores (mean 88.31% vs 81.7%, p = 0.087). Positive aspects of the model as described by the students included its simplicity and ability to improve their three-dimensional understanding of the inguinal canal. Students requested more hands-on time with the model during the tutorial.
The present study supports current literature in that low-fidelity anatomy models are a useful adjunct to aid students’ learning of complex anatomical concepts. Students may benefit from creating their own inguinal canal model to retain as a personal study tool.

Patients with IBD, particularly those on immunosuppressive therapy, are at increased risk for developing vaccine-preventable illnesses. Adult vaccination policy and vaccination in patients with IBD are presently being at a very low level in India. This review discusses in detail the need for vaccination, levels of immunosuppression, a brief account of live and inactivated vaccines, available vaccines, and their utility in patients with IBD, with a special focus on recent recommendations. We screened all fetal echocardiograms performed at our institution for the past 5 years for the indication of family history of cardiomyopathy. read more Twenty-six patients were identified who had fetal echocardiograms performed due to a family history of cardiomyopathy. Three out of 26 patients (11.5%) had findings of decreased ventricular function and dilation consistent with cardiomyopathy. All who had cardiomyopathy on fetal echocardiography had parents with genetic mutations (2 maternal, 1 paternal), including one mother who had a cardiac transplant at age 8 for dilated cardiomyopathy. All 3 affected infants had prenatal planning for high level care and were transferred to our facility immediately after birth for cardiology evaluation and management. 2 patients required inotropic support in the newborn period. One patient was transplanted at age 2 months. One patient required ECMO support for one week and initially recovered, but subsequently required mechanical support and listing for heart transplant. We recommend patients with a strong family history of cardiomyopathy in either parent, especially those with known genetic mutations associated with cardiomyopathy, have fetal echocardiograms performed.
A detailed understanding of the epigenome of cardiovascular disease (CVD) should broaden current insights into mechanisms of atherogenesis and help identify suitable biomarkers for disease risk and progression. This review addresses the question whether a consensus has been reached on identifying the main aberrant DNA methylation profile in CVD. Additionally, it presents advances and setbacks in the search for specific CVD biomarkers.
Although the literature points to DNA hypermethylation as an epigenetic landmark of CVD, inconsistencies are significant. In particular, the DNA methylomes of peripheral blood cells and the vascular wall do not show a consistent direction of change in all studies. An additional significant hurdle is the relatively low study-to-study reproducibility and the difficulty to assess specificity for CVD. Nonetheless, a number of biologically plausible markers have been proposed that warrant further studies. An integrated model for dynamic changes of DNA methylation during the natur for dynamic changes of DNA methylation during the natural history of atherosclerosis predisposition and progression is presented, that might reconcile conflicting findings. Cohort design and technical criteria for DNA methylation analysis need to be further homogenized to allow for meaningful validation. As stable DNA methylation profiles are likely determined by genetic variants, many of which might control a range of diseases, it is anticipated that CVD biomarker discovery will be a delicate balancing act between reproducibility and specificity. The building of knowledge about current risks from changes in air temperature has been established as critical for informing the starting point for human health risk assessments in a climate-changing world. The study presented in this paper provides the application of the maximum/minimum temperature complex method in Colombia to identify the simultaneous behavior of daily extremes of air temperature and provide a tool to assess human health risks due to temperature variability. An established classification of mean temperatures exists for the country, and maximum and minimum temperatures have been studied but never as simultaneous variables. The max/min temperature complex analysis aims to describe the air temperature regime of a particular place by studying the frequency of simultaneous occurrence of extreme daily temperatures. The study consisted of the construction of a contingency table that combines the behavior of the daily maximum and minimum temperatures using a subdivision of 5 °C intervals. A 5-year (2010-2015)-long dataset of 171 weather stations from the entire territory was prepared by identifying, filtering, and completing the missing data.
