  • Traditional Fantasy Tattoos
by jonvandyck on July 25, 2023 at 2:11 am

Lovers of fantasy have been getting their favourite characters, landscapes, monsters, spells etc, for a long time and in many different styles. My favourite style for fantasy tattoos is American traditional. I think the bold lines, heavy black and saturated colours, and crazy subject matter suits the style perfectly. I am a huge lover of … Continue reading Traditional Fantasy Tattoos

  • Gallows Tattoos:
by jonvandyck on July 18, 2022 at 8:01 pm

Gallows as we think of them today usually consist of two upright posts and a crossbeam from which a rope with a noose at the end hangs, usually with a trapdoor that will open, or something for the hanged person to stand on that gets pushed or kicked out from under them. But this traditional … Continue reading Gallows Tattoos:

  • Guillotine Tattoos:
by jonvandyck on June 13, 2022 at 9:08 pm

For those who are unfamiliar, the guillotine is a device made for execution by beheading. The structure consists of a tall wooden frame from which a razor sharp and heavy blade hangs ready to fall on its victim who is placed in a stock of sorts, leaving the neck exposed and ready to be separated … Continue reading Guillotine Tattoos:

  • Terminal Nation - Echoes of the Devil’s Den (Review)
    by samhoulden1@nospam.punknews.org (Sam Houlden ) on May 2, 2024 at 4:00 am

It seems like half a lifetime ago that Terminal Nation released Holocene Extinction. In fairness, it has been almost five years, and bear in mind it dropped immediately pre-pandemic, then that’s probably a key reason it feels like an even longer time. When Little Rock’s finest dropped that record, full of fury at the inhumanity they saw around them and with a gleeful lack of apologies for raging, directly and unveiled, against those injustices, it landed cleanly and powerfully. What was at that point, a fertile and burgeoning death metal/hardcore crossover scene, has become a sort of coalition of resistance, made up of the more politically minded bands across those genres in what continu...

  • The Slime - Trapped on Blood Island (Review)
by mikebored@nospam.punknews.org (mikebored) on April 25, 2024 at 4:00 am

Hailing from the gritty streets of Toronto, Ontario, The Slime unleashes their ferocious energy in their latest release, "Trapped on Blood Island." This three-track album marks a significant progression for the band, following their brief but intense EP, 'Living on Borrowed Slime,' which aptly captured the essence of 80’s hardcore punk in just four minutes. Released under the banner of Cursed Blessings Records, The Slime channels the aggressive spirit of bands like Municipal Waste and Suicidal Tendencies, while delving into gruesome themes reminiscent of old horror films. The album opens with a brief but impactful first track, featuring an excerpt from an unidentified movie before launch...

  • Full Of Hell - Coagulated Bliss (Review)
    by samhoulden1@nospam.punknews.org (Sam Houlden ) on April 24, 2024 at 4:00 am

If someone had said to you, 15 years ago, that one of the few truly extreme bands that had acquired both an army of fiercely loyal, unrelentingly supportive fans; and also a huge degree of critical acclaim, leading, in part, to some degree of unlikely crossover, then I doubt you’d have said “that’ll be a grind/noise band from Maryland/Philly with 22 EP’s/collab records/Splits and 5 LP’s in the coming decade and a half”. And if you did, then I’d be totally cool with it if you fancied giving me a heads-up on the upcoming Euromillions lottery numbers, because the odds are probably similar. But that’s the timeline we find ourselves in, folks. Full of Hell are almost a constant at...

  • The Winks - Green Eyes (Review)
by jasonic@nospam.punknews.org (Jasonic) on April 23, 2024 at 4:00 am

The Winks have been flying under the radar of the Midwest punk scene for a number of years. This St Louis band is led by lead singer / guitarist Dillon Dunnagan. Fans of the contemporary pop punk bubble will most likely know him from his work as the current bassist of Dan Vapid and the Cheats. Following a self released album and a few digital singles, the Winks return with the seven song Green Eyes.“Can You Feel My Heart Beating” is the perfect opener as it serves as a solid introduction to the best qualities of the Winks. It commences with a nice and loose alt rock feeling, not unlike the Replacements. The bassline carries the verses leading to the bombastic chorus. This track would hav...

  • Melvins - Tarantula Heart (Review)
by johngentile@nospam.punknews.org (John Gentile) on April 19, 2024 at 4:00 am

In any number of interviews, Melvins mastermind Buzz Osborne has stated that since the band has achieved EVERY goal he has set for the band, anything going forward is a bonus. That means, art wise, the band is truly untethered to fan expectations, financial goal posts, and even the internal concept of what a Melvins album “should be.” Perhaps paradoxically, this might be the main thing that has kept people interested in the Melvins and has granted them longevity. Not as paradoxically, it is the exact reason why their art is exciting and not the same album 14 times in a row- I love Motorhead, I love Ac/DC, but does anyone really care about Hammered or Stiff Upper Lip. Yet, I DO care about...
